& Yangtze River Cruises
The Yangtze River boasts some of the world's
most spectacular landscapes of misty mountains,
breathtaking gorges, bamboo groves and serene
lagoons. Along its narrow, cliff-bound course
lies some of China's greatest cultural treasures
- ancient tombs, temples & natural wonders.
Widely regarded as one of China's celebrated
scenic attractions, the Three Gorges cruise
along the Yangtze River is the centerpiece of
most itineraries.
The
Three Gorges Dam, the most ambitious engineering
project of its kind, is planned for completion
in 2009 when the river will rise to a final 575
feet above sea level, submerging existing towns
along the way and flooding the narrow gorges of
the Yangtze's tributaries, creating a lake
behind the dam & smoothing out the shoals &
rapids of the river. Phase Two of the Three
Gorges Dam project was completed in June 2003;
the river has risen to 443 feet above sea level.
China's new dam promises to yield the equivalent
power of 15 nuclear plants as well as control
the centuries-old problem of devastating Yangtze
floods. However, over 1.5 million people have
been relocated to make way for the dam. Although
the dam has changed the river landscape, it has
also made the Lesser Gorges more accessible. So
choose from the river cruises below and book
your Yangtze River Cruise tour today!
